1. Overview
I designed and developed a complete custom Shopify OS 2.0 theme from scratch for A&A Honey, transforming a family-owned raw honey business into a premium, faith-forward e-commerce brand. Built 33 fully customizable sections and components across a Figma-to-code pipeline with pixel-accurate translation. Developed a complete design system with custom typography, brand tokens, and reusable component architecture. Implemented structured data, self-hosted font loading, AJAX cart integration, predictive search, and performance-first asset delivery. Established a scalable, editor-friendly theme that gave the client full control over every page without touching code.
2. Problem
A&A Honey had no digital storefront that reflected the quality and values behind the brand. The business needed more than a template. It needed a custom-built experience that communicated trust, family heritage, and product integrity to a faith-driven audience. Without a structured theme, the brand had no way to tell its story, educate customers on product quality, or convert traffic at scale. The gap between what the brand stood for and what the site communicated was the core obstacle.
3. Process
The process began with a full translation of the brand's Figma designs into a production-ready Shopify OS 2.0 theme, built entirely from scratch with no starter theme or framework dependencies. A design token system was established first, defining six brand colors, three self-hosted font families, a modular type scale, and layout variables, all controllable through the Shopify theme editor. From there, 33 sections and components were developed across homepage, product, collection, blog, search, cart, contact, and utility pages. Each component was built for reuse and flexibility. Product cards rendered with custom SVG backgrounds and honey drip animations. A predictive search system was implemented with debounced API calls and AbortController for request management. Structured data was layered in through FAQPage, LocalBusiness, and BreadcrumbList schemas. Performance was addressed at every level, with self-hosted fonts eliminating third-party DNS lookups, passive scroll listeners preventing jank, section-scoped CSS reducing payload, and eager loading reserved for LCP elements. Accessibility was treated as a baseline requirement, not an afterthought, with focus traps, ARIA attributes, keyboard navigation, and semantic HTML throughout.
The Design.
Following launch, A&A Honey had a fully operational custom Shopify storefront with complete editorial control over every section of every page. The theme delivered 33 production-ready components, each configurable through the Shopify theme editor without developer intervention. Page architecture covered all core commerce flows, including product discovery, collection browsing, blog content, cart management, search, and customer contact. SEO foundations were set with structured data on FAQ, business info, and breadcrumb navigation. Performance benchmarks were met through zero external CDN dependencies, deferred script loading, and responsive image delivery. The brand's visual identity, story, and product offering were unified into a single, cohesive digital experience built for long-term growth.
